Art Wood, grand frère de Ron Wood (the Birds, the Creation, the Rolling Stones), fonde son groupe the Art Wood Combo en parallèle de sa participation au Blues Incorporated d'Alexis Korner et Cyril Davies, deux figures incontournables de la scène londonnienne du début des années soixantes. En 1964 le groupe avec l'ajout de Jon Lord (orgue) Derrek Griffiths (guitare) puis Keef Hartley (batterie) et Malcolm Pool (basse) devient the Artwoods. Leur son est très marqué par le jazz et le blues, ce qui les rapproche d'une autre grande formation anglaise de l'époque Manfred Mann (également le nom du leader du groupe, étrange hein?), cependant ils n'ont jamais eu le succès de cette dernière et en 4 ans d'existence malgré un LP et quelques singles ils n'arrivent pas à se faire une place parmi les grands. Le groupe se sépare en 1967, Keef et Malcom partent rejoindre John Mayall, tandis que Jon Lord deviendra quelques années plus tard l'organiste d'une célèbre formation de hard rock....Deep Purple!
J'ai choisi une reprise de Nancy Sinatra de these boots are for walking, cette version a le mérite de développer une approche différente de ce grand morceau, et ça rend franchement bien non?

The Artwoods was founded by Art Wood the older brother of Ron Wood (Birds, the Creation, the Rolling Stones) previously from the Blues Incorporated, a band with two of the most important figures of the early london scene Alexis Korner and Cyril Davies. Between 1964 & 1967 the Artwoods did several singles and one LP, but they failed to success in the charts even if they were a very appreciated club band. Their sound is very jazzy and bluesy, and reminds me a bit the best cuts of Manfred Mann. Their Drummer (Keef Hartley) and their bassist (Malcolm Pool) joined John Mayall band, whereas a few years latter Jon Lord became part of the mythic hard rock band Deep Purple. These boots are made for walking is cool cover of Nancy Sinatra tune, with a great groove that will stuck you to the dancefloor.
